Today we explore some useful mental strategies hand Dr. Matt Long. During an endurance event like a marathon, you can follow two strategies: the association (which would be to focus on internal physiological sensations, such as heart rate, respiration, or muscular sensations) and dissociation, which will see more detail, and using people like Paula Radcliffe, the world marathon champion.
Cognitive decoupling involves entering a mode of "distraction", in which we focus on some stimulus or mental task chosen to allow us to support the effort long periods of time. We can distinguish four types of modes of distraction:
- Observational: visual games that rely on environmental cues, such as houses, lampposts, cars ...
- Auditory: stimulation through music. It may be the "touch" a song in your head without being listening with headphones.
- Cognitive: mental games that usually have to do with counting or the alphabet list.
- Fantasy: imagine things like you're leading the marathon running for a while, or a site you like.
Associative strategies are an essential part of any endurance event, but we can not be in this mode from start to finish. It is recommended to alternate cycles of dissociation and association, in which we also concentrate on the stride and breathing. And watch someone go crashing into "your world"!
